as an Education Administrator
Abstract
‘The values that are hidden inside one’s heart decide ones own direction in life.’ In the era of curriculum reforms, as a worker in academic affairs and administrations, one must first understand oneself, establish the main body of focus, and constantly ask oneself what my values, goals and beliefs are in order to stand firm in this wave of curriculum reforms and lead the way of development and implementation of the curriculum for the tam members.
This thesis, constructed by descriptive research method, documents my personal adventure in exploring my philosophy of curriculum development. After understanding the relevant theories of the curriculum development through the academic literatures, I use “the self” as the main shaft to examine my life experience in education and to grasp the concepts of curriculum development that are embraced by Elementary Education. My teaching experiences as a freshman teacher, the stories relevant to the courses that had taken place on the educational grounds after I have taken part in the works involving academic affairs and administrations, are shared so that the self reviews during the process of self discoveries could be discussed from where my beliefs for the curriculum are established upon.
I grew up in a traditional ‘male dominance’ family, yet without a male sibling. My parents’ high expectations on me nurtured my personality which is constantly seeking for self improvement and in pursuit of perfection. It was very lucky of me that I received a lot of attentions and helps from my teachers during the years when I was in school. This experience in my school years had built up my belief in education, which is “Students are the Focus.” When I first became a teacher, the Educational Reform Acts by the government had awakened my consciousness as a teacher in curriculum development and had strengthen my belief in Learn by Doing philosophy, which is ‘Treating the curriculum as the learning experiences for the students, providing the real-world environments, and allowing the children to build knowledge through experiences’. As I have been involving in the works of Education Administrations and conducting researches in the post graduate studies, my beliefs of ‘Curriculum is the processes of implementation and activities; and is part of one’s life experience as a whole.” and ‘Curriculum development is the processes of cooperation and profound thoughts of team works, and the processes of democratic involvements and the implementation of the rights and the power.’ are established by my experience in the real-world and through the processes of dialogues and reviews, and the interaction between theory and practice.
Through this journey of self discovery, I realized that the construction of curriculum philosophy came from the beliefs of core values embedded in the threads of life. Curriculum development philosophy influences the decision making in the curriculum and the further directions of the curriculum. The results from the implementation of the curriculum also correct the curriculum philosophy. This is a process in a loop and is a journey without an end. The most important thing is it helps educators to understand the cultural threads in the research fields and improves the professional capabilities of the teachers in curriculum development.
