The target goals of asthma treatment aim at avoiding known allergens and irritants which may trigger symptoms and controlling them in order to improve patients’ well-being in their lives.Asthma self-management is required to be initiated by patients. The purpose of this study was to identify asthma self-management behaviors and their predictors which might be applied as reference in nursing. This was a descriptive study. One hundred and four patients were collected from a medical center in Taipei. The structured questionnaires including basic attributes, Beck depression inventory, self-management behavior scale, asthma knowledge scale, asthma attitude scale and asthma self-efficacy scale were used to collect data.T-test, one way ANOVA and Scheffe’s Method test were used to analyze demographic attributes and disease characteristics. The relationships among depressed condition, knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy and self-management were tested by Pearson Productmoment Correlation Analysis. Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis was applied to identify the essential predictors. This study revealed the findings as follows: 1) The averaged score of self-management behaviors of patients with asthma were about 58.56(±9.46) which stayed in the mid-level; 2) There were significant differences in scores of self-management behaviors by patient’s gender, age, education level, marital status, family history of asthma, effects by other chronic diseases, usage of peak expiratory flow meter, regular clinical practices and frequency of annual clinical practices; 3) The relationships between asthma patients’ attitude or self-efficacy and self- management behaviors appeared to be positive correlation; 4) Gender, peak expiratory flow meter application, regular clinic practice, frequency of yearly clinic practice and patients’ attitude were significantly important predictors of self- management behaviors for asthma and explained 60.4% total variation. The findings of this study might assist medical professionals to understand the self-management behaviors of asthma patients and associated factors which could provide knowledge as the reference for developing effective health care education and nursing care in asthma patients in the future. The optimal goal is to save medical resource and improve quality of medical care.
