The thermal camera was set up on an X-Y control platform to trace high temperature objects and monitor the thermal image. The developed system could maintain the highest temperature on the center of the thermal image by rotating the control platform to achieve the purpose of heat tracing. Extreme tracing speed of the X-Y control platform was obtained through experimental study. The limiting value of tracing speed of X-direction was 3.54 °/sec by the method of comparing every pixel ( 640×480 pixels ), and 4.43 °/sec by the other three methods of comparing 1/4, 1/16, and 1/64 of all pixels. The limiting value of tracing speed of Y-direction was 2.95 °/sec by the method of comparing every pixel, and 3.54 °/sec by the other three methods of comparing 1/4, 1/16, and 1/64 of all pixels. Performance experiments of the X-Y control platform indicated that the minimum error of 1.32° was obtained by comparing 1/16 of all pixels and the minimum error of 1.44° was obtained by setting center region of 50×50 pixels.
