Abstract
The purposes of this study were to explore some related factors concerning adolescent political values, political interest, voluntarily behavior, curriculum experienced and political activity.
A total of 848 adolescents, randomly selected from junior high and senior school in Taiwan, responded to a set of instruments including the Curriculum experienced Scale, the Political interest Scale, the Democratic values Scale, the Left-wing/Right-wing values Scale, the Voluntarily Behavior Scale, and the Political Activity Scale. The statistical methods used to analyze the data were descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, one-way MANOVA, Discriminant Analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, CFA-confirmatory factor analysis and Structural Equation Modeling(SEM).
The major findings were as follows:
1. Adolescents identify with democratic values, but lower level on political tolerance. They don’t intend to left-wing or right wing values , few frequency on political interest and political activity and middle level on voluntarily behavior.
2.There were significant difference in democratic values, left-wing/right-wing values, voluntarily behavior and political activity concerning gender. But there were no significant difference in political interest and curriculum experienced concerning gender.
3. There were significant difference in curriculum experienced, political inteset, democratic values, left-wing/right-wing values, voluntarily behavior and political activity concerning development.
4. There were significant difference in political interest and political activity concerning SES. But there were no significant difference in curriculum experienced, democratic values ,left-wing/right-wing values and voluntarily behavior concerning SES.
5. There were significant difference in curriculum experienced, political interest democratic values and political activity concerning party identity.But There were no significant difference in left/right values and voluntarily behavior concerning party identity.
6. Tolerance of political values could significantly discriminate the low, middle, high level of adolescent political interest.
7. Curriculum experienced had significant direct effect on democratic values and voluntarily behavior.
8. Political interest had significant direct effect on voluntarily behavior and political activity.
9. Curriculum experienced had significant indirect effect on political activity through democratic values and voluntarily behavior. And political interest had significant indirect effect on political activity through voluntarily behavior.
10. Hypothesis of Adolescent engagement in political activity were confirmed by the analysis.
Finally, some suggestions to make decision on curriculum, administrator in school, leader of party, adolescence and further research were propose according to the results.
