Sixty one grade 5 elementary students were used as subjects with 30 in the Concept Mapping Group (CMG) and 31 in the Skill Orientation Group (SOG). Both groups met twice a week with 40 minutes per session for 10 weeks and followed by 4 weeks of observation. Students were asked to take the Basketball Skill Test (BST) and to response the multiple choice of the Basketball Problem Solving Test (BPST) before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the 10-week session. Descriptive statistical methods were used to analyze the data including repeated measure design and t-test. The results indicated that: 1. there were significant improvements on post-test of CMG in the abilities of reverse prediction, assessment, prevention and solving problem of basketball but with no significant improvement in the abilities of direct prediction, interpretation and decision making. 2. there were significant improvements on post-test of CMG in the abilities of basketball shooting, dribbling, passing and overall performance. 3. there were significant improvements on post-test of SOG in the ability of problem solving but with no significant improvement in the abilities of direct and reverse prediction, assessment, prevention of problem, interpretation and decision making. 4. there were significant improvements on post-test of SOG in the ability of basketball dribbling and overall performance, but with no significant improvements in shooting and passing. 5. the overall problem solving ability test of the CMG was better than the SOG and 6. the overall basketball skill performance test of the CMG was better than SOG with the exception of dribbling. It was recommended that the application of concept mapping strategy should be used in basketball teaching and training and future studies should be applied to other sports.
