These P2P systems form the overlay networks, which are logical and abstract networks built on top of the Internet. Essentially, peers randomly choose logical neighbors without any knowledge about underlying physical topology. This may cause a large amount of traffic in communication among peers, because of the mismatch of topology between the logical overlay network and the physical Internet. This topology mismatch problem may result in poor performance and scalability for Peer-to-Peer systems. A possible way to improve the performance of Peer-to-Peer systems is the construction of the overlay network based on the knowledge of the physical network topology. In this thesis, we will propose the use of the options “Record Route” and “Time Stamp” supported in IP to explore the physical path between peers. With the knowledge of physical topology, a peer could choose the nearest peer who has the files of interest. By the topology-aware peer selection, our approach outperforms traditional P2P systems by random peer selection. Our approach only incurs low overhead and can be deployed easily with any kind of P2P systems. Not only the achieved better performance, our approach also significantly reduces the overall traffic consumed by the P2P systems. Yen-Cheng Chen 陳彥錚 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 44 zh-TW
