By the same token, those urban milieus provide escape hatches may be conceived the fourth places. To release from stress or to find peace of mind is more than a normal need to most people in the present era of melancholy and in the good old past as well. It is argued in this study that the psychological escape as such requires specific kinds of spatial setting to sustain retreat functions. To characterize these settings in spatial terms is the main task of this undertaking. Tainan city is the investigation area in which a number of different fourth places are identified, and their spatial qualities are specified.The thesis concludes with a few principles regarding the interventions of the fourth places and with the remarks urging professional adjustments both in attitude and in practice to make the living environments more humane.
