Summary: | 碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 公共衛生研究所 === 95 === Motherhood has been a persistent issue in women’s studies. The main concern is about the implications of women’s reproductive functions for patriarchal domination. Some feminists argue that women should refuse motherhood since reproduction functions to reproduce patriarchy, whereas others argue that reproductive function and accompanied pleasure and creativity are exclusive to women. By distinguishing institutions from experiences of mothering, recent feminists reconsider motherhood and suggest that gender, race, class and other primary organizing principles of society are factors shaping.
This thesis intends to focus on reproduction decision and pregnancy experiences of the SLE patients whose pregnancy have been medically and socially labeled as highly risky. Through analyses of data collected from in-depth interview and focus group discussion with SLE patients as well as from other secondary sources, the author argues that, while illness experience and social expectation render stigmatized identity, the SLE patients view biological mothering as a way out of social stigmatization. Moreover, though the SLE patients’ reproduction decision has been shaped by their multiple identities constituted in concrete social relations, individual’s motivation also play an important role in it.
