The information control of each phase or process (especially R&D) in products lifecycle has become an important topic. Product lifecycle management (PLM) system is a good tool used to manage the product information with the higher attention of information technology by enterprise in recent years. It begins from document management system, and then expands to a product development system to manage products from planning, designing, manufacturing, to product recycling or terminating. Meanwhile, it also collaborates with suppliers or customers to run the product development system.
During the product development process, a lot of information that is worth reference will be produced. Enterprises should make the best of knowledge management and share the experience and technology to others. With the arrival of the knowledge economy, knowledge management plays more and more important role in the key topics of management. If knowlodge management wants to bring benefits, it must combine the routine work through the systematically operation to accumulate the experience and knowledge.
In this paper, 'H' company in power supply industry is a case to study the process to introduce PLM, and the use of this system as a knowledge management tool. We study the company profile, industrial environment and PLM system first, and then discuss the plans, processes, issues, effects and success factors of introducing PLM system. Further more, the system is also applied as the knowledge management tool including knowledge acquisition, storing, sharing, and creating. It is demonstrated that knowledge management can use PLM platform or tool to be implemented in business administration.
