Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant, which is distributed worldwide mainly via atmospheric long-range transport. In Europe and North America, atmospheric Hg researches started earlier and are more thorough and extensive. On the other hand, atmospheric Hg studies are still in the beginning stage in Taiwan and there is a lack of long-term monitoring. As a result, this study was aimed to investigate the temporal variation in atmospheric Hg concentrations in the Taipei metropolitan area with more than one year of samplings and analyses. Data of other air pollutants and meteorological factors were also collected to study their correlations with atmospheric Hg. Samplings of atmospheric Hg were conducted on the campus of Ming-Chi University of Technology in Taipei County between June 2006 and August 2007. The overall average concentration of total atmospheric Hg was 4.48±1.67 ng m-3. This value is higher than the Northern Hemisphere background concentration of 1.7 ng m-3, suggesting the influence of anthropogenic emissions. Seasonally, the average atmospheric Hg concentration was the highest in winter (4.91±0.82 ng m-3) and was the lowest in fall (4.11±1.10 ng m-3). Diurnally, the nighttime average (4.77±1.88 ng m-3) was higher than the daytime average (4.23±1.51 ng m-3). Correlation analyses indicated that atmospheric Hg and CO and NOx were positively correlated, while atmospheric Hg and wind speed were negatively correlated. It is speculated that the fluctuation in atmospheric Hg concentration is influenced by local industrial activities and traffic. Nevertheless, high wind speed facilitates the dispersion of atmospheric Hg and thus lowers its concentration. Additionally, few samples were analyzed for the species composition of atmospheric Hg. The average concentrations of gaseous elemental Hg (GEM), reactive gaseous Hg (RGM), and particulate Hg (PHg) were 4.65±1.67 ng m-3 (96.95% of total atmospheric Hg), 75.04±56.88 pg m-3(56%),and 71.29±42.66 pg m-3(49%), respectively.
