Description
Summary:碩士 === 銘傳大學 === 應用英語學系碩士班 === 95 === ABSTRACT The study aims to examine the effects of literature circles in cooperative learning activities on communicative competence among junior high school students in Taiwan. 70 students of the eighth grade in two English classes participated in the study. The control class was taught using the traditional and teacher-centered approach. The experimental class was taught using literature circles in cooperative learning activities. T-test statistic procedures and EXCEL calculated system were used to analyze (1) whether the experimental class gained higher scores than the control class on oral communicative performance, (2) whether the experimental class presented higher motivation than the control class on oral communication after participating literature circles in cooperative learning activities. In addition, the study also investigates the effects of literature circles on oral communicative performance between high, medium, and low achievers. The results reveal that students in literature circles achieved significantly higher scores on the quizzes and the oral tests than those in the teacher-centered learning environment. It is expected that the study will provide EFL teachers in Taiwan a different approach to teach speaking and consider using the learning environment in literature circles to improve the students’ oral communicative competence.
