Selecting representative works published in Taiwan and China, it is done by sorting, and stating the works adopted the methodologies of history research, reference review and generalizing analysis. There are six chapters in this thesis. Besides the first chapter Introduction and the last chapter Conclusions, the second chapter Types and Features trace back to the origins of literature and essay, because the features could only be revealed by revealing their source. The third chapter Structure investigates the themes, arrangement, and narration. The fourth chapter Subject Matter is classified, based on its contents, into delight cameo, philosophic cameo, aues, especially in language usage. So the wording polish, article rhythm ,and language structure are discussed. The progress of children’s essays, reviewed in this study, covers the works from 1945 to 2006 in Taiwan. Over 50 years’ cultivation, the children’s essays have accumulated significant publications and achievements. The features of obtaining material from “narrating” and “childhood life” are well developed.
