He was once a famous and important artist in China. After giving up his worldly life, he devoted his whole life to study Buddhist sutras, keep austere manners, and do researches about Jing Tu Zong, Hua Ian Zong, Lyu Zong. Besides, he tried his best to preach Lyu Zong of South Mountain, worship Buddhism and behave as what Jing Tu Zong says. This research is a first exploration to Master Hung Yi’s daily behavior and formation of his Buddhist thoughts. It’s a documental research with relevant records and forward explanation. In order to assure readers of the reliability of this research, Master Hung Yi’s writings, lectures and theory had been adopted in this paper. Reference material from Buddhist sutras of Jing Tu Zong and lectures made by temporary Buddhist masters had been adopted, too. The research is focused on Master Hung Yi’s view and position of his Utopian world, the relation between Master Hung Yi and Buddhism in China. Here’s the summary of each chapter: ChapterⅠ Preface In this chapter, the motivation and purpose, means and procedure, boundary and restriction of the research has been illustrated. This part provides most of the background information for this paper. Chapter Ⅱ Formation of Master Hung Yi’s Behavior and Views In this chapter, the reason of Master Hung Yi’s renouncement of his worldly life, the mode of his life style after he became a monk, the precept of not eating after noon and his predestined relationship with his mentor has been demonstrated. Mater Hung Yi’s dramatic life and his preachment of Buddhism by art had been slightly mentioned in this part. Chapter Ⅲ Content of Master Hung Yi’s Utopian World In this chapter, the formation and development of Buddhist Utopia has been considered. Through analysis of Master Hung Yi’s writing could a person understand the basis of his dedication to Buddhism. Supplement about Da Cheng views of the world has been remarked in this chapter, too. Chapter Ⅳ Master Hung Yi and Buddhism in China In this chapter, Master Hung Yi’s views and stand has been noted. The idea of charity to everything, philosophy of life, etc. has also been illustrated. Chapter Ⅴ Master Hung Yi’s Contribution to Buddhism Master kept the austere manners, promoted the idea of his Utopian world, preached Buddhism in South Min for 14 years at his late years. The influence on residents are self-evident, his devotion to Buddhism did take an important place in China, too. Chapter Ⅵ Conclusion This chapter sums up the paper. It continues to lecture on Master Hung Yi’s Utopia world, explain his promotion on study Buddhist sutras and keep the austere manners.
