Taking aim at the white LED technology, the current trends of technology development are summarized through the patent analysis based on the USPTO database, and the possible ways to the future technology are put forth using the 40 principles and 8 evolution patterns found in the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ). Before this theory can be applied, the current stage of current technology from the life cycle viewpoint must be checked. It is shown from the study that the number of patent application during the period 1996-1999 grew up gradually and declined after the year 2000. Among the active companies the General Electric stand on the top position. When compared with the other countries involved, USA ran far ahead, and the first patent from Taiwan appeared at 1999. As for the patent citation, US 5998925 of Nichia and US 6252254 of GE belong to the highest rank. The development trend of patents issued each year based on the life cycle theory was analyzed with the use of SPSS software. It is found that the current white LED technology lies in the transition stage from the growth into the maturity. With respect to the white LED technology, the variety of phosphors and the manufacturing variations are the key points. In this study, the means function matrix and the technological features concerned would be put forth. Following the evolution patterns of TRIZ, it can be found the heat dissipation problem of package must be solved urgently.
