Abstract
Water meters belong to standard gauges, which need to be calibrated according to CNS codes. In general, 300 liters (larger flow) and 50 liters (small flow) water are required to flow through the calibrated water meter. If the detected value differs from the standard value, an adjustment of gear interference is required. Today, more than 30% manpower of water meter manufactures are needed to calibrate water meters based on human recognition and recording, which is very tedious and error-intensive.
Image capture device, linear ball screw motion platform and optic sensor’s driver were used to finalize the proposed system, which behaved the ability of detection and automatic recording of water meter gauge number, dial indictor and numerical indicator. By using Visual Basic 6.0 and Matrox Image Library, the proposed system was implemented. The purpose of using automatic inspection system of water meter is to reduce human resource and avoid human error. Although this research cooperated with a domestic manufacture, the proposed system is still very primitive. However, it demonstrates the potential to deal with automatic inspection for water meter. The system accuracy after repetitive tests is 100% for numerical indicator, 80% for dial indictor and 90% for gauge number. The proposed system can also be promoted and applied to any other analogue gauges inspection, such as electricity meter, gas meter, distance meter, operation speed meter, and oil meter.
