In 1974, Dr. Amsterdam pointed out that the term “Periodontal-prosthesis” means the comprehensive dental treatment designed by patients with moderate to severe periodontitis.
There are some conditions that occurs in periodontal patients, such as improper crown to root ratio, pathological tooth migration, posterior bite collapse, malocclusion, secondary trauma from occlusion, and temporomandibular joint disorders. These can be treated by periodontal surgery, root canal therapy, orthodontic treatment, and implant placement to maintain the health of teeth and the supporting tissues and provide patients with the functions such as phonation, mastication and esthetics during and after the treatment courses. These treatments also provide patients with an oral environment that is easy to clean and maintain. Periodic recall visits is important to achieve successful outcome on the long-term basis.
This thesis presents 9 patients with moderate to severe periodontitis that were full mouth rehabilitated or partially treated. The treatment plans from the beginning of the therapy to the accomplishment of prostheses were customized for each patient according to their oral contitious, periodontal status, economic situation, time availability and demands, aiming at creating an oral environment that is easy to maintain oral hygiene by patients. The assurance of long-term success is based on periodic recall visits.
