A descriptive correlational and cross-sectional design with 200 family members of patients in the emergency department of a teaching hospital in Taichung County were recruited as the sample. The instruments adopted in this study included the Family Perceived Stress Questionnaire, the Family Coping Strategy Questionnaire, and the family’s demographic data and patient’s characteristic of illness sheet. Data were analyzed by SPSS/PC 12.0 for Windows. The statistics used were mean, percentage, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe’s test and Pearson product-moment correlation. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The stress perception of the patients’ family members in the emergency department was at “moderate” degree. The greatest perceived stress among family members was the personal dimension of stress perceptions. Then it was the illness of patients dimension of stress perceptions. Next, it was the inter-personal dimension of stress perceptions, and finally the environment dimension of stress perceptions . 2. Most family members of patients in emergency department tended to adopt problem-focused strategy. The frequency of using copying strategies by the most family members of patients was “sometimes”. 3. The relationship between the perception of the stress and the usage of coping strategies by the family members was found that the more stress the family members perceived, the higher frequency they would use problem-focused coping strategy. In addition, the stress within personal and inter-personal dimensions were related obviously to the whole coping strategies. 4. The demographic data from those family members revealed that both “the whole family income and the personal stress perceptions” and “times for accompanying patients to the emergency department and the environmental stress perceptions” shown the significant differences. 5. Moreover, the demographic data from those family members revealed that both “gender and emotion-focused copy strategy” and “marital status and emotion-focused copy strategy” shown the significant differences. 6. The data about the characteristic of illness of patients presented that “the triage degree and the personal stress” had the significant difference. 7. Besides, “times of being in the emergency department and emotion-focused copy strategy”, “the triage degree and problem-focused copy strategy” had the significant difference, too. This study provides not only the implications for nursing practice, nursing administration and nursing educations, but also the recommendations for the further studies.
