For the progress of excavation technologies, the number of long tunnels is gradually increasing. Because of the characteristic of tunnel closure, once a traffic jam or accident has occurred, it may lead to heavy casualties due to the high risk and difficulty of rescue.
The main purpose of this paper is to design an advanced traffic control system for long tunnel that can take appropriate traffic control strategy on time and provide real-time information while accident and congestion occurred.
Basically, the system provides traffic monitoring, traffic flow controlling, and real-time traffic information. The main architecture of this system is composed of traffic events collection (input), transmission and central computer (process), traffic situation displaying and traffic controlling system (output). The technological process is: (1)collecting real-time traffic data by detecting instruments or other data collection systems, (2) transmitting data to the control center, (3) data analyzing and strategy drafting by central computer, (4) displaying the traffic information to the public by traffic information displaying systems or controlling traffic flow by controlling systems.
The main subject in this study is how to build an advanced traffic control system which satisfies the requirements including operation, maintance, and management. According to the requirements of traffic control and management, I elaborate the essentials of setting terminal facilities, and provide the comprehensive strategies of how to design this system.
This article refers to related practical experience for the design of traffic control system. In this article I approach the system architecture from different angles, and provide detailed steps of system design for further usage.
