Summary:碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 景觀設計學系碩士班 === 97 === The aim of this paper is to find out the design principles of outdoor spaces which can attract the elderly people to stay and to improve the importance of outdoor spaces to nursing homes and retirement communities by utilizing the literature review, environment behavior observation, in-depth interviews, and also by designing a questionnaire against the elderly people. Based on both quantitative and qualitative analysis, the research shows that the elderly people not only use the outdoor spaces (almost) everyday, but also take the outdoor spaces as a consideration when choosing the nursing homes or retirement communities. The result of this research reveals that the ideal outdoor spaces to the elderly people should be convenient to approach and be barrier-free environment; the parking lot should be constructed underground to prevent from pressure; the outdoor spaces should equipped with some shades and landscapes elements; trees and gardens should be built around these spaces; the deciduous trees can provide shades during the summer time and sunbeam during the winter time. When talking facilities, the slip resistance floor should be a very important issue when constructing the outdoor spaces; all the seats and fitness equipments should meet the criteria of human factors engineering to the elder people; there should also be enough seats located at the spots where are not windy; and furthermore, the pond and stream are also welcomed. It is hoped that this paper could be a useful reference and guidelines to the authorities, to the people who plan to run nursing homes or retirement communities and to the elder people and their families when evaluating which nursing home or retirement community to settle down.
