This part has been continuously, rapidly expanding from central streets and roads to lanes. This study aims to look into the space phenomenon reflected by the lane development of Eastern Taipei from the phenomenological perspective. From a Flâneur’s observation and experience, the reality/ invisibility/ representation meanings of space are driven, which become social choice for people in the city. The purposes of this research are as follows: (1) All the lanes of eastern Taipei have their own appearances and meanings. What context could be discovered from them? (2) From fragmental spaces to collective life styles. What flâneur’s could be experienced and produce a way of social choice in the city? (3) As space becomes the subject to express itself, human turns into object to compose the content of city. Under this inter-subjectivity situation, what meanings of space could be recognized ? With the phenomenological method of the qualitative data analysis and Lefebvre’s (1974/1991) theory of space production - the space meaning of eastern Taipei’s lanes are studied. The study area of this research is on the lanes at the two sides of Dun Hua S. Road in eastern Taipei. The samples of flâneurs are selected at bus translations within the research area. Flâneurs are chosen with purposive sampling that 18 flâneurs are received in-depth interviews from August to September 2006. There are three aspects in the findings of this research. Spatial practice: People are experiencing space with their own body and recognizing the truth of the real world. Creative ideas are practiced by both flâneur’s and shop owners to against mainstream of consumption. Representation of space: The close physical touch gives flâneurs the patterns and habits of life. Every time of creating the art piece of space presents the space meaning with the identifiable method of the call. Representational space: Creation of space tends to derive from people’s imagination, and what eastern Taipei has created is the aura of the whole space, not only the historical extension. Therefore, space consumption of eastern Taipei has changed from the utilitarian function to the spiritual needs, desires, and satisfaction. The consumption of objects has transferred from physical aspect into symbolic value. For people who wandering in the city, the nature of space actually reflects its form derived from people’s detainment, gradation, and accumulativeness as well as people’s essential or intangible desires and demands. As a result, variety and mobility conforming to the contemporary life style and values are being continuously derived. Ying-Hung Li 李英弘 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 77 zh-TW
