Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between foreign-spouse families’ cultural capital and their children’s academic achievement by exploring the overall trends of children of foreign-spouse families’ socio-economic status and the cultural capital. Suggestions were provided for education administration authorities and school education.
Questionnaire survey was adopted in this study as a research method. The researcher proposed “The Foreign-Spouse Families’ Cultural Capital Scale” and “The Children of Foreign-Spouses’ Academic Achievement Scale” as instruments of questionnaire survey. Children of foreign-spouses studied in elementary and junior high schools were selected as research samples. The research was conducted on June, 2007. Eventually, two hundred and ninety-nine valid questionnaires have been returned. These data was analyzed with SPSS12.0 to carry on descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and simple regression analysis. The findings were as follows:
1. Majority of foreign-spouses in Taiwan mainly came from Mainland China and Southeast Asia.
2. The socio-economic statues of foreign-spouse families were generally low.
3. The cultural capital holdings were limited and deficient in foreign-spouse families.
4. The foreign-spouse families with high socio-economic statues had higher cultural capital holdings than those with low socio-economic statues.
5. In foreign-spouse families, Taiwanese mothers got higher cultural capital than Taiwanese fathers.
6. The academic achievement of foreign-spouse’s children could be significantly predicted according to their levels of cultural capital.
