Propionibacterium acnes plays an important role in the formation of acne. The antioxidants may reduce the occurrences of hypertrophic scar and keloid. The aim of the research was to estimate the potentials of the essential oils from Taiwan native plants for mending acne condition. The results indicated that the six essential oils (Artemisia princes, Crossostephium chinense, Cinnamomum osmophloeum, Glechoma hederacea, Eupatorium formosanum, Pinus morrisonicola) exhibited antimicrobial activities against acne-related pathogens by broth dilution method. Glechoma hederacea showed the greatest inhibitory effect with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 0.34 μL/mL against P. acnes. The anti-inflammatory activities were determined by detecting the effects of essential oils on the secretions of pro-inflammatory cytokines from ThP-1 cell line induced with P. acnes and the capacities to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase. Crossostephium chinense, Glechoma hederacea, Eupatorium formosanum and Pinus morrisonicola can suppress the productions of pro-inflammatory cytokines. All the six essential oils can inhibit 5-lipoxygenase with the IC50 values of 0.018 to 0.031 μL/mL which were lower than that of ?bisabolol (0.043 μL/mL). The antioxidant activities estimated by the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity and β-carotene bleaching test revealed that G. hederacea essential oil had the strongest antioxidant effect, followed by the A. princeps one. Therefore, the six essential oils in this study could be used in mending acne condition resulted from the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. none 蔡玫琳 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 109 zh-TW |

Glechoma hederacea showed the greatest inhibitory effect with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 0.34 μL/mL against P. acnes. Therefore, the six essential oils in this study could be used in mending acne condition resulted from the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities.
