Back then, the development of higher education focused mainly on public universities, however, because the call for education reform arose from the public, the government imposed less and less restrictions on education. Starting from 1980, a lot of universities have been established, and therefore the design of campus received more attention from the public. Universities, old and new, public and private, all tried to make plans for multi-development of the campus and wondered how they should redesign the campus from a reflective perspective. However, as one of the most important constructions of campus, front gates of universities did not receive much attention and have remained an issue that few people touch upon. The front gate, representing the spirit of each university, is the most important entrance to the campus, also a landmark of a township, or even of a city. As universities in Taiwan are established in different times, their locations, spirits may very much differ from one another. Front gates of different universities also showed different constructive forms and style. The thesis proposed here examines the front gates of 61 major universities in Taiwan, including public ones, private ones and even normal universities. The aim of the thesis is to, first of all, record the forms and style of different front gates and analyze the transformation of style. Second, after analyzing different landscape elements of the universities, to discuss the style and forms of these constructions, either the gates were reconstructed because of the need, or were well preserved as historical heritage. The methodology includes literature review and field study. To study through the historical archives of universities to trace back the transformation of the front gates, and meanwhile, through field study to make observations on the landscape elements of front gates to proceed to further analysis.
