The proposed design is compatible to the entropy decoding for JPEG, MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4, H.264/AVC and VC-1 video coding standards. To reduce hardware cost, the strategy of co-working with RISC is developed to provide flexibility to extend to support a new video coding standard with low effort. The proposed design adopts the codeword tables merging and sharing, and integrates the various entropy decoding into a simpler controller. To reduce the required memory space, a look-up table partition algorithm covering various video coding standards is also proposed. The proposed design uses a multiple prefix decoding method to diminish the memory space requirement. To reduce energy consumption, the proposed design applies partial combinational component enabling on entropy decoding to reduce energy waste. The proposed partition algorithm treats the high frequency codewords without searching suffix codeword tables to reduce power. The low power concept of high probability data path with lower capacitance is involved in the multiple decoding.
