The study applied a quasi-experimental design. Study participants were parents of infants who were treated at Chang Gung Memorial Children’s Hospital. The inclusion criteria are birth gestation less than 37 weeks, infants without congenital anomalies, and parents speaking Mandarin or Taiwanese. The experimental parents received 6 sessions of group intervention. The control parents received usual routine care. The final samples were 35 parents for each group. Parental self efficacy was measured by Resources Utilization Questionnaire and Maternal Confidence Questionnaire. Stress was measured by Perceive Stress Scale while depression was measured by Beck Depression Inventory. Questionnaires were filled out one week before and after group intervention. Descriptive statistics were presented by percentage distribution, mean, and standard deviations. Paired-Samples t test, Independent t test and Differences t test were used to examine effectiveness of applying empowerment strategies to establish a parental support group of pre-term infants regarding their self efficacy of resources utilization, maternal confidence, perceive stress and depression. The experimental group had higher scores in self efficacy of resources utilization than control group (t=-2.78, p=0.01). There were no differences between the experimental and control groups in maternal confidence (t=-0.59, p=0.56). There were no differences between the experimental and control groups in stress (t=1.41, p=0.16). The experimental group had lower scores in depression than control group (t=2.95, p=0.01). This study demonstrated participating the parental support group of pre-term infants could promote resources utilization and decrease depression. The study results could serve as a reference of initiating parental support group for other institutions and may be implemented by other neonatal intensive care units in the future.
