The purposes of this study were to explore that the factors influence quality of life(QOL) on patients receiving percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG) and family caregivers’ satisfaction. Background. PEG is the preferred method for providing enteral nutritional support in patients with dysphagia. However, QOL of patients with PEG and satisfaction of family caregivers about long-term tube feeding via PEG are not sufficiently understood. Design methods. This study adopted cross-sectional research design. This was a descriptive and correlational survey research. Forty patients with PEG and thirty-five family caregivers of patients with PEG were selected from two medical center and one regional hospital in Taipei. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Results. The major findings of this study were as follows: The mean score of QOL was 48.8±8.5. Four domains for measuring QOL in descending order were:“social relationships”, “environment”, “psychological”, “physical health”. Patients activities of daily living(ADLs), perceived health status, nutritional status, and social support were significantly positively related to QOL. Family caregivers’ age was significantly negatively related to family’s satisfaction. Family caregivers perceived health status were significantly positively related to family’s satisfaction. Using stepwise multiple regression analysis, it was indicated that social support provided by family, activities of daily living, and perceived health status were significant predictors in overall QOL, explaining 61.6% of variances of the QOL. Conclusion. In conculusion, long-term tube feeding via PEG can provide stabilize nutritional support and improve some aspects of QOL for patients. This study suggests that the management of PEG in the community require specialist resources. This may provide a more holistic service for the patients and family caregivers.
