Purpose: To describe demographic characteristics and the associated risk factors of recidivism of incarcerated sex offenders in southern Taiwan.
Method: Experienced psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers used the questionnaires for assessment and treatment of the incarcerated sex offenders from 1999 to 2004 in a southern Taiwan jail to interview five hundred and three incarcerated sex offenders. Data on demographic, offence characteristics were collected at the same time.
Results: The average age of 503 sex offenders in index offence is 33.3 years old. Thirty-eight percent of them are graduated from junior high school. One hundred and fifty seven (31.2%) of them are graduated from senior high school or above. Two hundred and fifty six (50.9 %) of them are unmarried. One hundred and sixty four (32.6%) of the sex offenders are jobless(including students). Two hundred and sixty three (52.3%) of them are alcohol over-consumer, ninty nine (19.7%) of them are drug abusers; and eleven (2.2%) of them are mental retardation. Fifty seven (11.3%) of them are with the record of sexual crime. Two hundred and twenty (43.7%) of them are with the record of prior non-sexual offence. Forty five (8.9%) of them are with the plan of offence. One hundred and seventeen (23.3%) of them are with the offence by chance. One hundred and thirty seven (27.2%) of them are date rape. The association risk factors of recidivism include prior non-sexual offence, male victim, poor interaction relationship with employer, threaten by verbal, threaten by weapon.
Conclusions: The study will establish the database of demographic characteristics and the associated risk factors of recidivism in incarcerated sex offenders in south Taiwan and these data will be useful for further prevention and researches of sexual offence.
