In the field of museum exhibition, the vision has dominated the way how people experience, understand, and interpret all messages of an exhibition for a long time. However, as the technical skill grows, the development of sounds in museum exhibition rises and flourishes day by day. At the same time, most of the researches about museum exhibition tend to discuss the technical or physical part of sound. Therefore, this thesis observes and analyzes the sound exhibit in museums from three basic aspects– the purpose, content, and method; and trying to get a whole picture of the elementary composition of sound exhibit.
The term “sound exhibit in museums” in this thesis means the one that uses sounds in any part of exhibition presenting process. Among all the sounds used, there is a special type that applies the artistic essence of sound – sound art. With the creative artistic characteristic, its contents and forms include more possibilities of sounds. Thus, this thesis tries to find out some new thoughts from sound art to give some ideas to the ordinary application of sounds in museum exhibition. This point of view leads us to another goal of this thesis, that is, to connect the two different properties in usage of sounds.
Through the document collecting and case studying, this thesis concludes nine purposes, three categories of contents, eight interpretative structures, and eight methods from sound exhibit in museum. These items constitute my observation and analysis framework. My conclusions are as follow: firstly, the purpose of sound exhibit takes a leadership among other elements. Additionally, this thesis searches out five basic modes of sound exhibit in museum. Secondly, either old or new media have their merits. Thirdly, the new thoughts from art pieces of sound comprehend: to develop the intermediary essence of sound to lead people into further meditation or discuss more abstract topics in museum exhibition; to emphasize individual experiences and interpretations; and to dig out more spatial features of sound. This thesis is only a description and analysis of phenomena about sound exhibit in museum. It needs more researches connecting the phenomena and practical applications to deepen our understanding of sounds used in museum exhibition.
