First, find out the life adjustment of first grade and second grade students who reared by grandparents at elementary school in Zhonghe city and Yungho city, Taipei County. Second, compare the differences in personal backgrounds of sex, grades, ranking of all siblings, etc. Third, analyze the differences of students’ life adjustment among reasons of grandparenting and types of grandfamilies.
This study used a method of questionnaire to gather and investigate relative data. Through purposive sampling, a total of 178 students were investigated, and 150 (84.35﹪) valid questionnaires were returned. The questionnaires included “Life Adjustment Scale of Grandchild” and “Personal Background Questionnaires”. Data were analyzed through SPSS for Windows by percentage, frequency, standard deviation, t-test, One-Way ANOVA, Scheffe’ method, Stepwise Multiple Regression, and content analysis. The results were as follows:
(1) In students’ personal backgrounds, most were second grade students. And boys and girls account for the proportion of half. In ranking of all siblings, most were the eldest among siblings.
(2) The primary care givers of children were patrilineage grandparents. Their age is distributed between 51 and 60 years old. Most grandparents reared their grandchildren since their grandchildren were born. Besides, most of the grandparents were lower social economic status; and their health was normal. Most of their source of income came from their children, and they think their economic situation is good enough.
(3) The main reason for grandparents to raise grandchildren was “parents’ absence for work”.
(4) Most of the type of grandparenting was “grandparents taking care in the daytime, and parents taking care at night”.
(5) "Life adjustment" of grandchildren was "good". And “School adjustment” was “very good”, but “Individual adjustment” was “very worse”
(6) Grandchildren’s life adjustment differed as a function of sex of
children, grandparents’ economic status, grandparents’ health situation and types of grandparenting.
Based on the findings of this study, recommendations for "grandparents", “parents", “teachers of schools”, " social counsel institutes", “government”, and "further studies" were provided respectively.
