碩士 === 臺北市立教育大學 === 視覺藝術研究所 === 94 === This thesis explores the formation of the feminine image in the works of the twentieth-centry painter Balthus and tries to explicate and analyze from the theoretical viewpoint of Freudian psychoanalysis the significance of the feminine image in Balthus'paintings. In his life Balthus Witnessed the modern artistic development of the West and its evolution over a century. In spite of the fact that the changes of forms of modern painting were rapid and bizarre, Balthus'insistence on the realistic style had not been affected. Of Balthus'paintings,the most fascinating are those depicting young girls in their adolescence.Such works make much use of the vocabulary of classical painting and yet manage to express the profound mental alienation and disquietude of modern people. this thesis cites materials from various articles about the feminine image in Western painting and makes reference to books which scrutinize the feminine image in Western painting from the angle of sex and lust.In those works,the authors discuss the evolution of the feminine image in Western painting and explain the historical origin of Balthus'feminine image from a perspective which is quite different from the standpoint of the mainstream painting.As for the theoretical part concerning psychoanalysis,this thesis discusses the feminine image in Balthus'painting with the defense mechanisms of the traditional theories in Freudian psychoanalysis. The approach employed in this thesis is as follows:in Chapter One,two main topics are explored,namely,the feminine image in psychoanalysis and the feminine image in traditional Western painting.Tzhe feminine image in psychoanalysis is used mainly for interpreting the documents concerning Freud's medical treatment of the young girl Dora and his analysis of Leonardo da Vinci's painting Sant'Anna,la Vergine e il Bambino.Chapter Two explores the feminine image in Balthus'life,including his relationship with his mother,his trauma,and the modern German poet Rainer Maria Rilke's attitude toward women.Chapter Three explores the significance of the feminine image in each perior of Balthus'works.Chapter Four explores the similarity and difference between Balthus and the paintings of Surrealism and Magic Realism.And Chapter Five discusses the significance of the feminine image in Balthus'paintings from the viewpoint of defense mechanisms.
