The study is trying to understand how undergraduate students cope with the death of peers, what are the factors influencing grieving process, and how is students’ grief translation process. The study employs qualitative in-depth interview methods and extendedly interviewed four informants. Data was analyzed after interviews. The study is presented by four parts: Life stories of the four interviewees and their deceased peers, the following coping after the death of peers, the factors of affecting grieving process, and grief translation process.
The result showed that:
1. Undergraduate students have various ways to show their response to the death of their peers, but feeling shock and immediate denial are most common.
2. The five factors affecting grieving process were: the reasons of unexpected death events, personal conditions, environment, unfinished business related to their deceased peers, and personal attitudes toward mourning.
3. The translation process of grieving included three stages. Students feel shock and deny in the beginning. Then they gradually accepted the fact of peers’ death after funerals and are willing to reveal their farewell. Finally, students created new meanings for life, living attitudes, and the concept about self.
4. The translation reflections that undergraduate students have after the death of their peers include: change the attitude about life, rethink about the grief, and rethink the fact of interpersonal relationships.
The researcher further discusses the above-mentioned points from this study. This study also makes suggestion on the practical aspects of future researches on families, friends, relatives of the deceased.
