Order-picking conumes 50﹪of the warehousing cost. How to perform efficient and effective order picking becomes a critical issue for warehousing management. One way to improve order picking is to pick more than one order in an order picking trip. This is referred to as order batching.
This thesis presents an approach for order batching in a one dimensional linear storage rack. The proposed approach is shown to be able to minimize the pickers’ traveling distances, which directly reduce the pickers’ workloads and improve the picking efficiency. Illustrative examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
