Summary:碩士 === 南台科技大學 === 應用英語系 === 94 === This thesis aimed to explore learning attitudes of elementary school students towards English learning. As a method of survey, questionnaire was adopted. The participants were nine regular classes of fifth grade students at an elementary school in Tainan City for the school year of 2005. A total of 375 students were asked to fill in the questionnaire and 364 of questionnaires were valid. The data collected from the questionnaires were analyzed by various analytical methods through the use of SPSS. The findings were summarized as follows: (1) Most students had positive attitudes towards English learning. (2) Difference in attitudes toward English learning existed between male and female students. (3) Difference in attitudes toward English learning existed between students having private lessons for English and students not having private lessons for English. (4) There was a relationship between students’ English learning attitudes and students’ cumulative years of English learning. (5) There was a relationship between students’ English learning attitudes and students’ starting age of English learning. (6) There was a significant difference in attitudes toward English learning lying between students who had learned English for three years and students who had learned English for five years. (7) There was a significant difference in attitudes toward English learning lying between students who started English learning at the age of five and students who started English learning at the age of eight. Finally, in the conclusion, suggestions and recommendations were made to teachers, educational authorities and parents according to the findings of the study. Recommendations regarding instructional assistance in English and future studies were also provided.
