The generated tracing path could be used to guide an automatic machine to inspect the quality of the contour, such as a groove for burying an O-ring, welding, or gluing, or to conduct certain working process along the contour. Two methods have been investigated in this study. The first method uses a fixed CCD to grasp the image of a workpiece so as to generate the contour path by image processing technologies. By similar technologies, the second method uses a moving CCD carried by a robotic arm to trace the contour and build up the path. Experiments are conducted to examine the results of both approaches which show that the second method has better performance in the precision of generating tracing path.
