Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the “well-being” and related factors of volunteer soldiers in the army. Questionnaires includes “Survey of Basic-level Soldier’s Life” was the research tool. Samples were conducted 964 in-service soldiers from troops and new recruits training units (512 volunteer soldiers and 452 conscripted soldiers). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics、independent samples t-test、ANOVA、Pearson product-moment correlation、and stepwise regression.
Research findings indicated that the current well-being of volunteer soldiers were medium. The well-being questionnaire covers 4 perspectives, including service satisfaction、family satisfaction、job satisfaction、and physical & mental satisfaction. Age、application status、service year、and willingness to extend service are the background variables that make significant differences in the 4 perspectives of well-being. Well-being is positively correlated to “organizational commitment” and “group cohesiveness”, and has significant positive predictability for the two variables. The explained variances are 57.5% and 53.7%.
Other conclusions included: (1) Among the volunteer soldiers, non-served youths ranged between 19-20 years old, having less than one month service and willing to extend their service, have a significant higher level of well-being. (2) Among the volunteer soldiers, non-served youths who are willing to extend service have a higher level of well-being, and in-service conscripted soldiers who are unwilling to extend service have the lowest level of well-being. (3) The “organizational commitment” of volunteer soldiers has positive predictability to “group cohesiveness”, and the explained variance is 55.6%. (4) Volunteer soldiers have significantly higher levels of well-being、“organizational commitment”、and “group cohesiveness” than conscripted soldiers.
Finally, based on the research findings, conclusions and suggestions were proposed for the army in order to enhance the well-being of volunteer soldiers.
