A few animal studies showed xylooligosaccharide also reduced blood lipids effectively. Diabetes mellitus was the 4th of top 10 cause of death in Taiwan, and type 2 diabetes mellitus accounted for 90-95% of the total number of diabetes patient. Type 2 diabetes mellitus was often caused by dyslipidemia to cause various complications. Purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of XOS on blood lipids in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Subjects were recruited by above 40 yrs, normal liver function and no dialysis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Subjects divided into three groups, one was taking of 2 g glucose group (G2 group), one was taking of 2 g XOS group (X2 group) and taking of 4 g XOS group (X4 group) for 8 weeks. After recruiting, subjects executed diet and life habit of questionnaire and evaluated anthropometric data, blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipid profiles and urine measurements at 0 wk and 8 wk of experiment. At 2 wk, 4 wk and 6 wk of experiment, 2 hr postprandial blood glucose and urine was analyzed. The results showed anthropometric parameter, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and insulin of three groups were no significantly change between baseline and final of experiment. After experiment, serum total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly decreased and HDL-C/LDL-C ratio was significantly increased in X2 group. After experiment, serum triglyceride and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were obviously lower and HDL-C/LDL-C ratio was obviously rising in X4 group. Synthesize the above conclusion to find that consuming XOS did not affect index of blood glucose control significantly everyday. XOS reduced serum total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol effectively when blood lipid was unusual particularly, and got the efficiency of improving blood lipids only need to absorb 2 g of xylooligosaccharide everyday.
