Summary: | 碩士 === 靜宜大學 === 食品營養研究所 === 94 === Curcumin was demonstrated to have good antioxidant capacity and could improve the immune function. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of curcumin on learning and memory ability, antioxidant status and immune function in senescence accelerated prone mice (SAMP8). Two-month-old SAMP8 mice were divided into control and 1% curcumin group, while SAMR1 mice was used to be the normal control. Food intake, body weight, open field activity test, single-trial passive avoidance and active shuttle avoidance test were performed during the experiment. The serum biochemical parameters were analyzed after sacrificed. The malondiadehyde (MDA) concentration, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity of liver, hippocampus, striatum, cortex were examined. The β-amyloid protein deposition of brain, motility and concentration of spermatozoa, proliferation of spleen were also evaluate. The result showed that the food intake, body weight and locomotion did not differ among three groups. The mice fed with curcumin had better single-trial passive avoidance results at the 24th hours, while the curcumin diet group had significantly better active shuttle avoidance on the second day(p<0.05); and β-amyloid protein of brain in the curcumin group was significantly lower than control group. The SOD activity of brain and liver, CAT activity of striatum, GSH-Px activity of liver in the curcumin group were significantly higher than the control group. The sperm motility of curcumin diet group tended lower than the control group without significant difference, and the sperm concentration did not differ among three groups. The T cell proliferation and IFN-γ concentration of curcumin diet group were significantly lower than the normal control group. In summary, we conclude that the supplementation of curcumin could improve the learning and memory ability, and promote the antioxidative defense system. However, the effect of curcumin on the immune function needs further study.
