As a result, unemployment and insecure employment are prevailing nowadays. It is an important issue whether an employee can get a stable and secure work or not in the given labour market. In recent years, the issue of youth unemployment has been more and more concerned, yet fewer researches related to this field of youth atypical employment are being held in Taiwan. However, one’s early working experiences can be great influenced towards later occupation career. The purpose of this research is to probe into four aspects of the atypical young workers in Taiwan: (1) the employment experience and trajectory; (2) their interpretations and their perception of the flexible employment phenomenon and environment; (3) self-adjustability; (4) ideal job. Interviews were used for data collection. The participants include 10 college graduated youths, aged 20-29, who devote or devoted themselves to atypical job due to the lack of appropriate full time job. The results are as follows: (1) the phase in the employment course of graduated youth is marked by complexity, variability, and reversibility; (2) the youths devoted to atypical work are involuntary mostly; (3) they quitted their jobs either by their own choices or under certain pressure; (4) there are nine “low” features of atypical works, including wage, welfare, working status, working safety, connection, autonomy, skill, challenge, and stability; (5) their attitudes toward the unemployment phenomenon and the whole employment environment are pessimistic and negative. Besides, they believe that personal expectation and the lack of employability are the main causes of under-employment; (6) they believe that the flexible employment will be the trend in the near future, and it has both advantages and disadvantages to the workers and enterprises, respectively; (7) they devoted into insecure work with different degree of self-adjustability; (8) they would consider various factors when they look for a job. Also, they do have some expectations about their ideal jobs. However, they consider the improvement of their abilities and working experiences would be of the most importance at the present stage. Finally, implications and recommendations for policy makers are also discussed and presented.
