The current study, based on the kinematical principals, was to analyze the movements of the upper extremities during a woodball swing. It was expected that the woodball coaches can take advantage of the research results in training the woodball athletes. A female woodball athlete, the second prize winner of the 1st World Cup Championship, 2004, participated in the present study. The age of the participant was 21 years old, with the height 163 cm and the weight 51 kg. A 3-dimensional motion analysis system was applied in the study. Four high speed cameras (Falcon analog cameras), 3 meters high from the floor, were used to collect the kinematical data of both the movements of the upper extremities and the woodball swing motions. Six retroflective, 13 mm in width, markers were bilaterally placed on the shoulders, elbows, and wrists of the participant; 2 markers were on the mallet (impact point) and middle of the woodball pole. The collected data were analyzed via the EVaRT 4.0 and Windows XP Excel software. The results are shown in the followings: 1. The entire woodball swing can be divided into three periods: takeaway, downswing, and follow-through periods. The total swing time was 1.84 s. The proportion of the three periods was about 5: 3: 2 for the takeaway, downswing, and follow-through periods. 2. During the swing movement of the mallet, the following variables approximately occur at the impact time point (about 1.5 s): the maximum resultant velocity, the resultant acceleration, the maximum velocities of the bilateral movements, the maximum accelerations in both anterior-posterior and vertical dimensions, and the maximum angular velocity of the wrists. 3. The movements of the upper extremities appeared to follow the principal of the sequence of the body segment in kinetic chain. The counter-movement occurs at the top of takeaway. Two points were suggested to the coaches for the promising training to the woodball athletes 1. The reduction of the anterior-posterior movements of the mallet can maintain the impact accuracy. 2. At the impact, fixing the wrist joints can increase the momentum of the impact. Key Words: Woodball, swing, kinematics
