Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships among codependency, self-emotions and love relationship quality. The sample consisted of 1007 college students (437 males, 570 females) at 7 universities in Taipei, Taiwan. Instruments used in this study included Chinese Codependency Assessment Tool, Self-emotion Scale and Love Relationship Rating Form. Data obtained in this study were analyzed by t-test and Canonical Correlation Analysis.
The main findings were as follows:
1. Gender differences on Codependency.
There were significant gender differences in codependency among Taiwan college students. Males had significantly higher scores in several codependency scales (viz., “other focus/self neglect”,“hiding self”,“family of origin issues” ) than females.
2. The canonical correlation between college students’codependency and their self-emotions were conducted and following results were obtained :
(1) When the students had more “low self worth/low self-affirmation”, “medical problems”,“hiding self”and“family of origin issues”, they had stronger feeling of “shame”and“guilt”and weaker feeling of“pride”.
(2) When the students had more “other focus/self neglect”, “family of origin issues”and“medical problems”, they had stronger feeling of“pride”and “guilt”.
(3) When the students had more“hiding self”and less“low self worth/low self-affirmation”, they had weaker feeling of “guilt” but stronger feeling of “shame”.
3. The canonical correlation between college students’ codependency and their love
relationship quality were conducted and following results were obtained :
(1) When the students had more codependency, they had higher “conflict/
ambivalence” and lower“intimacy”in their love relationship.
(2) When the students had more “hiding self”and less“other focus/self neglect”, they had lower “intimacy”, “care”, “acceptance/ respect”, “passion”and“global satisfaction” in their love relationship.
(3) When the students had more “low self worth/low self-affirmation”and less“family of origin issues”, they had higher“passion”,“care”, “global satisfaction”and lower“conflict/ambivalence” in their love relationship.
Finally, implication of this study was discussed and advices were given as a reference to future guidance work and related research.
