Mr. Liu De-Hei, who is the famous Pipa master, takes an active roles in the contemporary field of music. Based on the traditional foundation of Pipa music, Mr. Liu not only integrates the predecessors’ achievements, but actively develops new techniques to perform Pipa music. Moreover, Mr. Liu has kept publishing theories of Pipa performing art for the recent years. With his unique penetration of performing arts, distinctive performing ways and fresh styles of composition, Mr. Liu contributes a lot and has a great influence on the development of Pipa performing arts. This thesis is based on the Mr. Liu’s background and his thoughts of art. Three perspectives were analyzed which include: thoughts of humanity, thoughts of performing art, and thoughts of creativity. In addition, by analyzing the two old-music-in-new-form Pipa pieces, 「Bawang Xiejia」 and 「XunyangYueye」, the expression of Mr. Liu’s musical philosophy and characteristics will be discussed in the matter of modified traditional pieces and sequential ideas for creations. Mr. Liu’s old-music-in-new-forms performing style pours animation into the traditional Pipa art.
