A modified coprecipitation process was developed for synthesis of chemically well-dispersed powders. For comparison, 3Y-TZP powders with and without Al2O3-doping were prepared . The experimental results were characterized by ion-coupling plasma enhanced optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), differential thermal analyzer (DTA), X-Ray diffractometer (XRD) and field-emission scanning electronic microscopy (FE-SEM). It is found that the addition of well-dispersed alumina to 3Y-TZP enables the sintered ceramics with finer grain and more uniform grain size distribution. Experimental results show that Al2O3 may affect the density, crystalline phase and microstructure of sintered ceramics even at a low content of 0.25 wt% as long as it is uniformly dispersed in the powders.
