By providing start-ups with equipments and R&D technology, incubation centers facilitate the effective integration of resources and help to reduce the risks that start-ups have to bear in the early stage of business development. There have been 95 incubation centers in Taiwan since the government took the initiative to foster the development of incubation centers in 1996. In order to establish a strong incubation industry in Taiwan, it is crucial to recognize the unique characteristics and the key to success of well-established incubation centers in Taiwan, and so the industry can find its niche. Incubation centers in Taiwan are affiliated to universities, established by research institutes, those administrated by the government or set up by private companies. This study provides case studies examining the key to success of five excellent incubation centers from each of the four different types, including National Taiwan University (NTU) Incubation Center, Ming Chuan University Innovation & Incubation Center, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) Incubator, Nankong Software Incubator, and In-Based IncuVestor Alliance. By conducting in-depth interviews with the centers and analyzing their success factors, this study explores the success keys shared by the five centers and provides reference for the sustainable development of domestic incubation centers in Taiwan. The study measures the performance of the centers on the scale of H, M, L by adopting 11 assessments including position, development strategies, customer values, scope of incubation, price, sources of revenue, related activities, execution ability, resources, substantiality, and effectiveness. The result shows that the five centers were rated “H” in most of the assessments, with the ITRI Incubator and Nankong Software Incubator topped the rest as both centers were rated “H” in all of the 11 assessments. In other words, the more “H” the centers received, the better their performances are. In conclusion, the common success keys to all of the five incubation centers included: 1. High-quality staff members in the center with a low employee turnover rate. 2. Enterprising the centers. 3. Integrating centers with innovation investment to enhance cost effectiveness for the centers. 4. Meeting customized needs. 5. Enthusiastic participation and sufficient resources from the parent companies. 6. completed evaluation and cultivation procedures. 7. Processing distinct position and comprehensive strategies. 8. Accomplishing 80 percent or higher occupied rate and survive rate of the star-ups. 9. Extending the advantages of the parent companies. 10. Diversifying sources of revenues.
