This research studied the development of female weight-loss process based on the
qualitative approaches including in-depth interview and grounded theory method, which finalizes the conclusions through scrutinizing the historical development, types of characteristics, related influential factors, and myths involved with the female weight loss process.
There are twenty selected interviewees with ages ranged between 25 to 40, lived in Taipei area, with above college education and who were or are currently experiencing weight loss. Through systematically collecting, analyzing and cross-examining data from the selected interviewees, twenty female weight-loss stories and weight-loss life histories are obtained. The research results and conclusions are shown as below:
Twenty stories of female weight-loss studied are attributed into twenty themes: keeping fit, regain slimming, pursue youth, keeping shape, regain youth, mother’s reminders, love determined, all for love, natural way, ideal couple, following trends, health mind, health crisis, successful experience, self-affirmation, self-care, self-adaption, self-prove, cocoon crash and asking for trouble.
The female weight loss process can be developed in two types: external-caused type and self-determined type. External-caused type of female weight loss process can be divided into two categories, which are “appearances first” and “important others”. Self-determined type of female weight loss process can be further divided into three categories, which are “pursuing health”, “self-fulfillment” and “weight unconcerned”.
Typically the process of female weight-loss is developed under six phases: body-image-unconsciousness phase (knowing-weight stage and unknowing-body-weight stage), body-image-consciousness phase (weight-careless, weight-consciousness, body-shape-dissatisfaction, and body-shape-satisfaction stages), stimulation phase (stimulations and make-up-mind stages), weight-loss-action phase (build-up-concepts, look-for-methods, begin-weight-loss-plan, lose-weight and retain-weight stages), critical phase (strong-willpower , weak-willpower, action-endurance, action-release, action-suspension, weight-loss-successfully, and weight-loss-unsuccessfully stages), and reflection phase (maintain-weight, regain-weight-partly, regain-weight-fully, keep-losing weight and stop-losing –weight stages).
In the aspect of emotion feeling factors of female weight-loss, they can be inducted into three categories: before weight-loss (including body-image-unconsciousness phase, body-image-consciousness phase, and stimulation phase), during weight-loss (weight-loss-action phase and critical phase), and after weight-loss (reflection phase). The emotion feeling factors of before weight-loss includes hope, expectation, sad, escape, angry, shock, envy, worry and upset. The emotion feeling factors of during weight loss includes expectation, endurance, pain, excited, angry, frustrated, give up, unsatisfied, self-sympathy and guilty. The emotion feeling factors of after weight loss includes upset, angry, happy, self-examination, discouraged and hope.
The influential factors of female weight-loss plan are inducted into 3 major factors: individual, weight-loss plan and social culture. The individual factor includes weight gain reasons, motivation, individual character, life habits, and beliefs. The weight loss plan factor includes methods, action clues, and execution. The social culture factor includes interpersonal influence, media influence, social influence and fashion style.
The characters of female weight-loss are: (1) different kinds of methods, (2)lots of weight -loss plans which are practiced with long periods , (3)body image and body shape caused body dissatisfaction, (4)different kinds of motivation and stimulation, (5)clothes frustrated female the most, (6) others’ viewpoints affected weight-loss action, (7)weight-loss means something to female, (8)successful weight-loss experience improved females’ confidence, (9)willpower is the key to success, (10)the meaning of weight-loss is not only to be more beautiful, (11)weight loss ”ritual” strengthen weight-loss ideas, (12)weight-loss companions help weight-loss action, (13)media influence caused female body anxiety, (14)uncomfortable feelings strengthen weight-loss stimulation.
The myths of female weight-loss are: (1) myth of body shape, (2)myth of weight number, (3) myth of slim-is-beautiful, (4) myth of slim-to-be-confident, (5) myth of successful weight-loss, (6) myth of overweight people are lazy, (7) myth of overweight people are dumb, (8) myth of self-management, (9) myth of overweight people love to eat, (10) myth of overweight people are not worthy to be loved, (11) myth of sex criticism, (12) myth of female competition, (13) myth of clothes fashion, (14) myth of ideal couples, (15)myth of marriage crisis, (16)myth of lose weight to obtain health.
Finally, according to the research results, the suggestions to future related researches are mentioned.
