The research methods adopted are “document analysis” and “content analysis”. First, we collected related documents by means of “document analysis” to frame categories for analysis of “picture composition”; second, with “content analysis”, we analyzed the teaching materials of “picture composition” in each edition of Chinese exercise books and compared their distribution, types and differences. At last, based on the research results, we proposed some suggestion to textbook editors, teachers and future researchers. Through analysis, we found out that: 1. The four editions all pay much attention on the design of teaching materials of picture composition; 2. In each edition, the appearance and types of teaching materials of picture composition are both decreasing by volumes; 3. The teaching materials of picture composition can been seen most often in the Han Lin Edition, while it is seen in the Jen Lin Edition least; 4. Among all types of picture composition teaching materials, “blank filling by looking at pictures” is the most commonly seen.  Based on the research results, we propose the some suggestion in this study. First, for textbook editors: 1. when compiling teaching materials of picture composition, they should consider the order and sequence; 2. the arrangement of simply making sentences by looking at picture and writing essays by looking at pictures seems to be insufficient, so more proportion should be put in this part; 3. the marking of heading for picture composition in teaching materials shall be re-evaluated to help teachers’ teaching. Second, for teachers’ teaching: 1.the teachers should plan the order or sequence for Grade 1 students to practice picture composition, arranging different learning issues by years; 2. the teachers need to grasp the procedures and methods for teaching of picture composition; 3. they should carefully choose teaching materials that suit the students. Finally, the suggestions for future researchers: 1. they can also study on the differences in contents between the old version of National Institute for Compilation and Translation and picture composition in Chinese exercise books of Grade 1-9 Curriculum; 2. the future researchers may explore different research directions by means of observation, interview or questionnaire.
