This research divides into two main parts, qualitative research and quantified research. The first part of the research is qualitative research. The core competency scale of shipping personnel is developed by having interviews with ten authorities in different companies on shipping, and combining analysis information, relative documents, and curriculums of the department of STM. The core competency scales divides into four parts, self-effect, professional knowledge and techniques, interpersonal communication of work, and personality special characteristic. Otherwise, there are eleven elaborations of them will follow behind. Another research is quantified research. It is combining the core competency scale with working conditions and the source of social information, and designing reliable, valid questionnaires. This research uses the core competency as a fixed variable to probes into the relative of the students’ occupational choices and those random variables (the working conditions and the source of social information). By the questionnaire survey, there are 455 of 500 available questionnaires which have been returned by the students in one of the four schools which have the department of STM. Those data are analyzed and verified by SPSS program, One Way Anova, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation and Regression Analysis. The result is that the STM students choosing shipping company as their best occupational choice is relative to core competency, the elaborations, working conditions, and source of social information. It means the person who has more core competency abilities will have more chances to work in the field of shipping. Moreover, the male is more sensitive than the female in core competency. About occupational choice, there are more younger job hunters choose to work in a shipping company or forward than elder ones; however, there are more younger job hunters choose their job depend on social information.
