Abstract
The study mainly investigated the correlation between English phonological awareness ability and real- pseudo words during the process of English as a foreign language learning. Differences between English phonological awareness ability and performance in real word and pseudo-word tests of primary students from different backgrounds were also studied.
Five hundred and eighty-eight primary fourth grade students, 293 males and 295 females, were involved in this study. The instruments used in this study included the phonological awareness test involving two parts-real words and pseudo-words and a students’ background investigation.
According to this research , the major findings included:
1. Onset and rime were the levels of English phonological awareness that students developed earlier.
2. The correlation between the phonological awareness and the pseudo-word test was higher than the one between the phonological awareness and the real-word test.
3. Females performed better than males in English phonological awareness.
4. The phonological awareness was highly affected by students’ family social-economic background and learning hours.
The researcher suggests that English teachers can predict the difficulty that students will encounter by using the pseudo-words, so students can be strengthened in English phonological awareness. Besides, teachers can make up English phonological awareness training material in order to tell students’ phonological awareness ability in the future.
