The purpose of the study was to investigate the outside reading behavior of the third and fourth graders concerning reading motivation, reading attitudes, favorite outside readings, and reading at homes, schools, and off-campus libraries. Surveys designed by the investigator were administered to students from sixteen elementary schools in Taichung City.
The conclusions of the study are presented as follows:
1. The subjects in general had positive reading motivation and reading attitudes.
Among them, girls had better motivation and attitudes than boys, while the
fourth graders performed better than the third ones.
2. The favorite outside readings of the students were storybooks or materials
with entertainment elements.
3. The parents encouraged their children to read after-school readings, and most of the students spent half an hour a day in average on reading. While most of the students liked going to school libraries, class libraries helped a lot on their
reading. Off-campus libraries, in the other hand, were the places to expand reading fields for the students.
Based on the findings above, recommendations were made for English textbook editors, teachers, educational authorities concerned, and future studies.
