The purpose of the study is to investigate the efficacy of the foot reflexology in pain perception, anxiety, and quality of recovery in the post-operative patients with lumbar diseases. The study is an experimental pre- and post-test design. Data were collected from three surgical units of a medical center in Taipei, Taiwan. Sixty patients participated in the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental or the control group equally in number. Thirty patients in the experimental group received 30 minutes of foot reflexology therapy during the post-operative day 1, 2 and 3. Thirty patients in the control group received only usual care. Measures included McGill Pain Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale –Anxiety subscale (HADS-A), and the short form Quality of Recovery (QoR-9). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and the Mixed Effects Model. The result revealed that there’s moderate to severe pain with mild anxiety and poor quality of recovery in our study subjects through the post-operative days. Three outcome variables were improving by time from day 1 through day 4. After our intervention with foot reflexology, however there’s no statistically significant improvement in the rest pain, activity pain, anxiety and relaxation by Visual Analog Scale. Nevertheless, patients received reflexology had first bowel movement earlier than the control group patients postoperatively (p=0.007, p=0.037). Results of this study provided vital information for caring patients with lumbar surgery. Tsay Shiow-Luan 蔡秀鸞 2006 學位論文 ; thesis 103 zh-TW
