Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 聽力學與語言治療研究所 === 94 === Abstract This study investigated the ability of first-graders with foreign parents to comprehend Mandarin phonetic symbols. Mandarin phonetic symbol comprehension skills were also analyzed in relation to intelligence, language ability and socioeconomic status. Sixty-two children were recruited for this study. All subjects were first grade students, and had completed a ten-week course in Mandarin phonetic symbol use at school. These children were without hearing impairment. Subjects were given the Diagnostic Test of Elementary Mandarin Phonetic Symbols Ability (DTEMPSA), the Performance Scale Subtest from the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-PS), and the language subtest from the Childrens’ Cognitive Ability Battery (CCAB). Parents were completed a questionnaire regarding indices of socioeconomic status. The findings of the research are as follows: 1. Performance on the Mandarin Phonetic Symbols Ability and the Weschler Intelligence subtest with similar to the normative population for those tests. Word-level comprehension and auditory comprehension skills evinced from the CCAB were also comparable to the general population. Word-level expressive skills on the CCAB were found to be significantly lower than the normative population, however. 2. Most of the first-graders in this study were of families of low socioeconomic status. 3. Mean scores on the Mandarin Phonetic Symbols Ability and Wechsler Intelligence Scale Performance Scale correlated positively with socioeconomic status. The language subtest of the Childrens’ Cognitive Ability Battery showed no significant correlation with socioeconomic status. 4. Performance on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale Performance Scale and the language subtest of the CCAB also showed a positive correlation. A significant correlation was also found between scores on the Weschler intelligence subtest and those of the Mandarin Phonetic Symbols Ability. Performance on the CCAB was not significantly correlated to performance on the Mandarin Phonetic Symbols Ability. 5. Findings from the current study suggest that the socioeconomic status and performance on the Weschler Intelligence Performance Scale of first-graders with foreign parents are predictors of their ability to comprehend Mandarin phonetic symbols.
